Delicious Apple Dessert Cake made from a decades-old recipe.
My mom has been making this Old Fashioned Apple Dessert Cake for as long as I can remember. Each year on our birthdays, my mom would let us pick the kind of cake she would make for us, and this was always the one my sister picked. It’s that delicious.
This is a really easy recipe, and it’s quick to make. The sauce may seem like an excess of fat, but it really makes the cake stand out. Without the sauce, the cake is still good, but with the sauce the cake is amazing!
You can use any kind of apples. I used Gala apples, which caused my cake to be a bit darker in color. If you want a lighter colored cake, either peel the apples first, or use a green apple.

This is really great–simple but amazing. The icing really makes it stand out. I made half the cake and a quarter of the icing, though used all the rum, and it was exceptional.
I have never had apple cake before. We have apple pie in my family a lot but not cake.
You should try it! It has a fabulous flavor, and it’s so moist and delicious!
Oh how I love apple desserts…and that sauce! YUMMMM! Thanks so much for sharing with us at Weekend Potluck. Do come back again soon.
The sauce really makes this go from a good dessert to a phenomenal one!
I need this right now with my coffee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A cup of hot coffee definitely goes well with it! (But really, a cup of coffee goes well with anything, right 😉 )
This looks divine and a great desert for winter too!
It’s delicious any time! Definitely a family favorite!
I can’t wait for apples to be in season here so I can get started on recipes like this one!
I’m with you on that! I’ve heard for most apples you want to wait until the first frost to make them sweeter, but I really have no idea if that’s just an old wive’s tale or not!
I’m not much for cakes and desserts, but this definitely looks yummy. I would certainly give it a try if it was offered to me! Sounds easy to make too – perfect dessert for Fall get togethers.
It’s a very good cake. I find that the older I get the less excited I am about actual cakes, but this recipe is still a delight.
Love the beautiful color of your cake and like Michelle, I bet your home smelled amazing!!!
It definitely smells good, and tastes even better!
I love apple cakes, this sounds wonderful, I’m ready for apple picking season to begin!
Me too! We have big apples on our tiny tree for the first year, and I’m so excited to see how they taste!
I am so ready for Fall! Our apple tree is nicely covered with apples just waiting to be used in yummy recipes like this!
Yay! I’m so excited for making apple sauce and apple pie filling!

It’s a perfect fall recipe!
I love that you are sharing a family tradition with us. The cake looks incredible and I can see why your sister picks it year after year.
Thanks! It’s been at least 20 years of eating this cake for nearly every one of my sister’s birthdays, and I still enjoy it!
I can only image how fragrantly delicious the aroma is in your home while this is baking.
It is so amazing!
