As a child, I always loved the song, We Three Kings. The thought of these wise men leaving their lives and setting off by faith to find the Messiah is such an amazing concept. And the star they followed inspired this Christmas craft of a cinnamon stick star sign.
O star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect Light.
-John Henry Hopkins, Jr.
While I made this Cinnamon Stick Star, I thought about how the wise men not only saw the star and understood its implication, but they left their posh lives to travel across several countries in the hopes that they might find the Messiah and have the opportunity to worship Him. They had no guarantee that they would find him. They had no guarantee of their safety. But they had an amazing amount of faith to follow the star.
I find it interesting that the star stood over Bethlehem for about 2 years, and yet there is no talk of the people of Bethlehem flocking to worship Jesus. Though they had grown up learning about the Messiah, and should have seen the significance, this wondrous sign was lost on the Israelites. And yet these foreign men understood that the star was important enough for them to leave their homes and also to bring expensive gifts on their journey.
Materials needed to make a Cinnamon Stick Star:
- cinnamon sticks
- hot glue gun
- board
- paint
- hand saw
Cut the board into a square, and paint it in your desired color.
Draw a star onto the board.
Hot glue cinnamon sticks into the shape of the star.
Use the saw as necessary to cut cinnamon sticks to the right sizes (obviously, be careful not to cut yourself), and continue gluing until the star shape is filled in.
Optional: if you want to add brackets for hanging, I would advise you do so before you glue on the cinnamon sticks, so you don’t end up breaking the cinnamon sticks.
This can also be made with sticks or driftwood, if you don’t want to purchase cinnamon sticks.
