Stop ants with this homemade ant repellent recipe! Already got ants? We’ve got an ant killer recipe for you too!
We’ve had a major ant problem this summer. They have been everywhere!! And they have been getting inside the house.
I don’t mind ants as long as they are outside and not fire ants but once they come inside, I just want them dead. We’ve been spraying them quite a bit with the ant spray mom already had. But one day we ran out and needed ant spray quick.
I turned to Pinterest and searched for homemade ant spray, but most had ingredients we just didn’t have on hand. Then I found this pin and I knew we had all those ingredients on hand!
DIY Ant Spray
What you need:
- Mouth wash, any brand
- Dawn dish soap
- Hydrogen Peroxide
How to make it:
- Mix equal parts of all ingredients in a spray bottle and mix well. No not add water.
Once all the ants are dead, you will want to sweep and mop them up. This ant spray can leave your floor a little sticky if you don’t mop it up. But I’m sure you’ll want to mop up those dead ants anyways.
If you’re having trouble with getting the stickiness to mop up, check out my tip for that in my 8 cleaning hacks for moms. But we didn’t have much problem with the stickiness, it went away with a good mopping/steaming of the floors.
Once you get rid of the ant, you want to make sure they don’t come back!
During my searching for ant spray, I read several places that ants don’t like citrus.
So we mixed a little bit of lemon juice about a tablespoon or two into a spray bottle of water and sprayed it around the baseboards and doors in the areas we’ve been having problems.
DIY Ant Repellent
- Put 1-2 tablespoon of lemon juice into a spray bottle.
- Add water until it half way to three-fourths full.
- Spray the areas were ants have been present in your home.
We are still testing this out, so I can’t say with confidence on how great it is working. But so far, so good.
Are ants invaded your home? What are you doing to get rid or them?

1-2 tbsp of lemon juice, and then fill the bottle 1/2 to 3/4 of the way? That can get you very different ratios depending on the size of the bottle. How big is it assumed to be, for reference, if anyone knows?
The ratio’s on the repellent one aren’t as important as the ant spray. It doesn’t have to be exact. I used 2 tablespoons and filled it 3/4 of the way up on a larger water bottle (the one in the picture about the size of a large lemon juice bottle).
