Have you ever been in the midst of a recipe that calls for powdered sugar, only to realize you are out of powdered sugar (or don’t have enough)? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had this happen. It used to be that I would stop where I was at, run to the store and buy more and come home to finish the recipe. But after having kids, running to the store mid-cooking just wasn’t realistic, so I found this DIY Powdered Sugar Substitute.
This powdered sugar substitute works great for replacing real powdered sugar. It does end up a tiny bit more granular in something like frosting, where powdered sugar is one of the main ingredients (but not enough most people would notice, unless you told them). But in cookies, or other baking, you can’t tell the difference.
All you need in order to make this powdered sugar substitute is a blender and granulated sugar. You will need as much granulated sugar as you need powdered sugar (1 cup of granulated sugar makes 1 cup of powdered sugar).
If you are wanting to make extra powdered sugar substitute to store, you will also need 1 tsp. of cornstarch for every cup of granulated sugar to keep the powdered sugar substitute from clumping.
It may be possible to use a food processor to make powdered sugar substitute, but I didn’t have much luck using mine. I felt like using a blender worked much better.
- Place granulated sugar in a blender. (Add cornstarch if you are planning to store)
- Blend for several minutes, until sugar is no longer granular, but powdery.
- Use powdered sugar substitute in place of the powdered sugar called for in your recipe.
That’s it! It’s really so simple!
