Fleece Earflap Hat

I stumbled upon a super cute fleece earflap hat pattern at the end of last winter. The timing to make it was obviously off, so I decided to make a lilac and purple fleece earflap hat for Baby Girl.  In the meantime, Little Man decided he really liked it, so he kept wearing it. I finally had to hide the hat from him, since it was a little too girly for him!  It’s a little bit big for Baby Girl, but it’s still pretty cute.

Unfortunately, when I went to write this post and share this awesome pattern with you, the pattern is no longer available from the blog where I got it, which was From an Igloo. However, I’ve found a pattern that looks similar and is free from a blogger that I’ve been following for years called I am Momma Hear Me Roar, and I’m also sharing a link to a pattern that looks exactly the same as what I used, but does cost $6.95 from Tie Dye Diva.
This was a really easy pattern to sew, as there was nothing complicated about it at all, and sewing with fleece is pretty easy. In fact, I had so much fun sewing my first fleece earflap hat that I modified the sizing on the pattern and sewed 2 more- one for Little Man and one for Miss Magoo.

Miss Magoo’s fleece earflap hat is dark and light pink, since pink is her favorite color. She keeps asking me, “Mom, don’t you just love pink?” I can’t be honest and break her heart- I just don’t like pink. But wish such a pink-loving girl around, I’m getting used to it! And when it comes down to it, I’d rather make things my kids will like than things I like but they refuse to wear.

Little Man’s earflap hat is actually made with fleece on the inside, but the outside I made from thermal waffle fabric (I’m sure that’s not the technical term, but that’s what I’m calling it).  I thought it would look cool, and I’m happy with how it turned out. 

If you use a fabric thinner than fleece, I would recommend using some interfacing, since otherwise you can see the seam allowance through the other side. 

For the decoration on Little Man’s hat, I used a red sweater that I had felted and cut out a car shape. Then I sewed on buttons for wheels, and used embroidery floss to sew the car on. I think it turned out cute, and he loves it!
