Jamie warned me a while back that I am starting to edge on the side of granola.  And while I don’t want to be a full on granola (and neither does The Hardworking Husband), I do want to move more toward using natural products.

In doing research, I have found that the uterine fibroids I have may have been caused by some of the unnatural products I’ve been using.

The soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and such I have been using have petro-chemicals (plastics) in them. And by putting those on my body or clothes, they are being absorbed by my body.

In my post “Learning to Celebrate Life,” I said that we hadn’t made a decision as what we wanted to do about having children.

While we haven’t fully made a decision, I have decided that I do not want to have surgery to remove the fibroids. I want to try a natural route in shrinking them.

And while I am unable to discuss all that I am doing to help shrink them, I can say I am working on eliminating the things that contribute to them.

I didn’t want to jump in and eliminate all of them at once.  It would be very overwhelming.

There were a few minor things that I could stop doing that were easy like stop using candles or wax burners. The fragrances in those are unnatural and can contribute to fibroids.

The first big thing I decided to do was switch to a natural shampoo and conditioner.

Switching to natural shampoo and conditioner may not seem like a big thing, but it really is.  It’s a process that took me about a month.

Your hair is so used to store bought products and has a bit of a freak out. For the first 2 – 3 weeks my hair was so tangly and not at all smooth like it had been.

By the end of the 3rd week, it started to calm down and act more normally. By the end of the 4th week, my hair was wonderful.

I do have a day here and there where it is weird, but I had those when I was using the unnatural products, too.

Before I share with you the products, let me say everyone is different, and what works for me may not work for you.  In fact, I started with one conditioner and switched to a different one.  I will share with you how to make both.

Let’s first talk about shampoo. I have been considering learning to make shampoo bars and soap for some time. But I really do not have time for it right now.

So I buy my shampoo bars from Granola Girl.  She has a great Etsy shop where she sells shampoo bars, soap, sunscreen, and so much more. She makes shampoo bars for blondes, for brunettes and ones for anyone. I buy the ones for blondes.

Shampoo bars

Granola Girl’s shampoo bars are alkaline.  And from what I can tell, most natural shampoo bars are. To balance the pH of your hair, you need to follow up with a conditioner that is acidic.

For darker hair, apple cider vinegar works great, and it worked great on my hair as well.  But it can darken your hair if you are blonde, and I didn’t want that.  So I made up my own conditioner using lemon juice for my blonde hair.

Homemade Natural Conditioner for Blonde Hair

2 cups filtered water (plus a little more at the end)

2 fresh sprigs rosemary

2 Tbsp fresh mint

1 cup lemon juice

6 drops lavender essential oil (I use Young Living essential oils)

In a small pan, bring 2 cups of water to boil.

Once boiling remove from heat add rosemary & mint and cover.  There is no need to cut up the herbs.

Allow to steep for 30 minutes.

Strain through fine sieve to remove the herbs.

Discard the herbs and allow the “tea” to cool.  Add more water to make 2 cups of tea.

Once cooled add lemon juice and lavender essential oil. Pour in a spray bottle. Shake to combine

Homemade Natural Conditioner for darker hair

2 cups filtered water (plus a little more at the end)

2 fresh sprigs rosemary

2 Tbsp fresh mint

2 cups apple cider vinegar. (I recommend using the inexpensive kind if you don’t make your own.)

Once cooled add apple cider vinegar and lavender essential oil.  Pour in a spray bottle. Shake to combine.

For both conditioners, you may need to adjust the amount of lemon or apple cider vinegar depending on your hair.  I had to play with it a bit to get it right for me.

If your hair is greasy after using it, you may need more water.  If it feels sticky, you may need more lemon or apple cider vinegar.

To use either conditioner:

First rub shampoo bar over hair and massage to cleanse all of your hair. Rinse shampoo out and then shake conditioner to make sure everything is mixed well.

Spray your hair with conditioner and massage through hair. Allow to sit on your hair for 1-3 minutes and rinse.

You will get a feel for how much of the shampoo and conditioner you need. And remember it is a process at first, and it can take some time to know how much your hair needs. I promise it gets better. Just keep going.

The next big thing I am going to switch to a natural product is Jamie’s natural deodorant. I’m told it’s not such a process as the shampoo & conditioner were.  But it’s a change in routine, and sometimes that can be big for me.

Can you comment on what the shelf life is on both recipes? I would guess that they would mold pretty easily if not refrigerated.

Kerry says that she has not ever refrigerated these, and that she's never had them go bad before she finished using them. I hope that helps!

Just a heads up, I did the natural method with Apple Cider Vinegar for about a year and LOVED IT- but after continuous use, it will LIGHTEN dark hair. I was complimented for the lovely ombre effect of my hair, but I did not want lighter hair ( I like my dark hair). FYI for anyone considering the ACV method, it will lighten your hair considerably after time
