How to Make Furniture Match, Without Buying a Set - Tips & Tricks to Make Yard Sale, Thrift Store, & Store Bought Furniture look like it goes together.

This table is a yard sale find, while the chairs came from a furniture store but nobody would guess they weren’t bought together!

First off, I’m not one of those people that thinks everything has to match perfectly.  I don’t want my house to be matchy, matchy.  But I do like my furniture to look like it belongs in the same room.

Second when it comes to buying furniture, I have a hard time shelling out the money for every piece.  When we bought our bed, we only bought the bed.  We didn’t buy the night stands or dressers because I knew we could find yard sale or thrift store furniture to re-do.  I just recently redid a nightstand and I think it looks great with the bed, even though it doesn’t match perfectly.  We saved a bunch of money and still have furniture that matches.

I think there are several ways to make your furniture match.  You can use all these tricks or even just one.  It depends on your style and taste.

Style – The easiest way to make furniture looks like it goes together is to buy something of the same style.  If you have the same style, you really don’t have to worry about much else.  Or you can have several pieces of the same style and a few “statement” pieces.

Color – Whether you have the same style or not, color is an easy & inexpensive way to coordinate your furniture.  With our nightstands, I’m painting them all black to match our bed.  It will minimize the fact, that they don’t match each other or the bed.  And you don’t have to paint the entire thing either.  With our table, my mom painted the legs only to match our furniture store bought chairs.

Coordinating Color – Sometimes a coordinating can have more of an effect than an exact matching color. I’m currently working on an end table, that will have a black bottom (to match my table and chair legs) but with a dark red top that will match other pieces in our living room. I’m pretty excited with how it’s turning out so far and can’t wait to share it with you when it’s done.

Size – If you match height and width, then it’s less likely that the furniture will stand out as an oddball piece.

Proximity – The closer things are to each other the closer you will want them to match. So if things, don’t really match consider moving them to other parts of the room, if you can.

While I’m not an expert diy’er or interior designer, it’s been fun learning some tricks to make my “cheap” furniture match the more expensive pieces.  Do you re-do furniture?  What are your tricks for mixing them in with your other furniture?
