Peas Cheese and Pickles is a great side salad that changes things up from a green salad. Great variety of flavors and textures.
As a kid my mom made Peas Cheese and Pickles. I thought this was a family recipe and that no one besides our family had ever made it. I had never seen it in a restaurant. I had never had it at a friend’s house. It was just something we only had at home.
Then I moved to Texas. Peas Cheese and Pickles salad was something available at all the BBQ restaurants. It was a little different than my mom’s, but was very close. Who knew that other people ate pea salad too?
After marrying The Hardworking Husband, I made him Peas, Cheese and Pickles. He asked me to change it up just a little. Mom had always made it with canned peas. The HH doesn’t like the texture of canned peas. So I started making it with frozen peas. We love it with the frozen peas, and it adds some extra crunch.
This salad is great for summer BBQ side dishes. Some other great side dishes are Carrot Craisin Salad, Creamed Corn, Crockpot Dr. Pepper Baked Beans, and Broccoli Jicama Coleslaw.

So happy to have found this recipe!
I grew up hating Green Peas (so much that I couldn't even eat dishes containing them in only small amounts). Even Frozen Peas, which are Much Better (IMHO) weren't anything that I could smile and consume at the same time. And I was Not a Picky Eater! Canned Peas and Canned Asparagus were the only two things that I simply could not tolerate.
Since this was posted the availability of Fresh Peas has grown significantly! I sincerely hope that you've already tried them. I buy them every time I see them these days.
What with the increased availability of Fresh Peas and Fresh Asparagus (which has been Freshly Available, rather Reliably for quite a bit longer and farther back), my lovely wife and I have recently been experimenting with different treatments of (different types of) Pasta with Fresh Peas, Fresh Asparagus and white sauces (cheese and/or wine based, primarily).
The two food that I hated most as a child I now cherish and go out of my way to eat as often as possible.
Gotta say I'm really looking forward to trying the Peas, Cheese and Pickles!!! I must admit, though, that I might also have to try it with a slight modification (addition)…

Very similar to our "back in the day" English Pea Salad. We've always called them English peas, I guess because in Texas we eat so many different kinds! Anyway, we just added some extra stuff- boiled eggs and onion, sometimes pimiento too. Thanks for sharing this!
