Adult coloring books have really become popular lately. I was so surprised by this! I’ve always colored along with my kids, but I never thought about having coloring books of my own until recently.
As I’ve bought a few items and talked to friends, I realized that most of us don’t really know what to try when it comes to adult coloring. Obviously we’re not still working with our box of 24 Crayola crayons, but what should we be using instead?
There are a lot of great choices for coloring books as well as coloring products right now, so I put together a list to help you out, based off recommendations from family and friends!
Or maybe you prefer geometric designs? If that’s your preference, there are a bunch of choices for you as well! Here are some Stress Relieving Designs, Mandalas, and one containing mandalas, henna flowers, and paisley.
If animals are more your thing, here are some Stress Relieving Animals, as well as this gorgeous coloring book, Animal Kingdom. And these Butterflies and Flowers are lovely as well!
If you’re Christian, I bought these really cute coloring books that have scripture integrated in them. I love that they’re high quality paper, and the pictures are gorgeous! The 2 I bought and loved were Today is Going to be a Great Day and Whatever is Lovely.
Some of the most popular adult coloring books out right now are coloring books from Johanna Basford. Her coloring books are made up of detailed pictures that build into a larger picture. Her coloring books include Enchanted Forest (see below picture for example), Secret Garden, and Lost Ocean. I know a lot of people that have and love these books.
So now that we’ve talked about the actual adult coloring books, let’s talk about your coloring supplies.
I can’t tell you how much I love, love, love Stabilo pens. They are great quality, vibrant fiber tipped pens. They don’t bleed through the coloring books I have. I first tried them when I was on a student exchange in Germany many, many years ago, and I spent years looking for them here in the US. I was so excited when I saw that Amazon was finally carrying them! They come in two sizes, 88 point (which is a very fine point) and 68 point (which is more like a marker size).
These Staedtler fine point markers are very similar, and have great reviews as well.
I have a lot of friends who enjoy coloring their adult coloring books with gel pens, like this set from Fiskars.
I even know quite a few people who prefer to use Sharpie Markers.
Maybe you aren’t into markers or pens? There are options for you as well!
These colored pencils have premium soft-core lead to make coloring smooth, and the colors easy to blend.
And these Primacolor colored pencils have a 5 star review, so apparently everyone is loving them!
Another friend of mine recently tried watercolor pencils, and she said she really enjoyed their blending ability, and how easy they were to color with. Not to mention they are pretty cheap, so that’s always nice.
Whatever medium you enjoy, we hope you’ll find the perfect products for yourself so you can enjoy coloring!

I use a combination of Erin Condren markers, Sharpie markers, and Crayola Twistables colored pencils for my coloring books!
I’ll have to check out the Erin Condren markers!
Pretty! I have yet to indulge in one of these, but I love the designs.
You so should! Some of them are pretty enough to be art when you’re done with them. And I was surprised that the prices are actually pretty good.
