Veggie Valentines
Veggie Stamp Valentines- Easy and fun way for little ones to make their own Valentine's Day cards!
I don't know if you ever made potato stamps as a kid, but I have vague memories of it. The other night when my kids were getting a bit antsy and Dan wasn't due home from work for 2 more hours, I knew we needed to do some serious crafting or I'd have World War 3 on my hands. So I got out some veggies, craft paint, and construction paper while the kids got into their paint clothes, and we got started with Veggie Valentines.
I cut the potato into chunks small enough for the kids to hold on to (we have big potatoes here in Idaho). Then I "carved" shapes on the potatoes. I did this by tracing the shape with a pencil, and then cut away the potato surrounding the shape.
I've been seeing on Pinterest that if you cut off the end of a stalk of celery, it looks like a rose when you use it for paint stamping. This would probably be more true if I hadn't just used a bunch of the celery to make Corn Chowder, but it was still fun for the kids. They loved the idea of using the veggies for stamping- it just seemed so silly to them! You can see the celery roses made in red paint.
Important note: If you want to make letters or words, make sure you cut them out backwards. I didn't think of this until the kids started stamping backward "I {heart} U"s.

Being essentially artistically challenged, I use small cookie cutters shoved into the cut potato and cut out all the potato around them. You can get the small cutters in letters and numbers, transportation, animals, shapes, etc.
