I thought it would be fun to make a piece of art for Dan for Valentine’s Day, but one that could stay up all year round. I have been seeing cute art made with the “&” sign (which is called an ampersand), and thought “You & me” would be cute.
I used an 11″x 12″ piece of scrap wood from a dresser we are building for Miss Magoo (I’m so excited to share that project, probably next month!). I spray painted the scrap with beige Krylon spray paint. While the paint dried, I made up a graphic with PicMonkey and printed it out- I’m including it in case you’d like to make this project, or if you’d just like to print it out.
Once the board was dry, I used a pencil to trace the letters on the paper onto the board. I thought about cutting the lettering out and painting through it like a stencil, but figured with the wood grain I would have a lot of paint bleed along the grain under the paper.
By tracing the letters, I actually indented the wood (I was using pine- obviously you wouldn’t be able to indent a hardwood). Then I used a Sharpie (I probably use Sharpies on far too many craft projects) to trace the indentation. Finally, I painted in the letters, though afterwards I wondered how it would have looked to just Sharpie the whole thing.
I added a date at the bottom. But just a word to the wise: double check your date before you paint it. Dan saw the sign and asked, “What are the numbers at the bottom?”
I was all put out. “Are you kidding me? You don’t know what the numbers are?”
He looked puzzled. “Our anniversary?”
So I took another look. Oh my goodness- I can’t believe I put 2014!!! Good thing this project was easy and only took about an hour, since I’ll obviously be remaking it!
Are you doing anything for your spouse/ significant other for Valentine’s Day this year? What are you hoping to get for Valentine’s?
